Whether it's Mamma Mia, Chicago, or the Lion King, Broadway offers some of the most riveting new musicals. But that's not all New York has to offer. Digging deeper, you'll find a theatre scene in the Big Apple unlike any other.

The Magic of Live Theater

The magic of live theater is something many people sadly miss out on these days. As great as movies are, nothing can quite replace the sense of anticipation and excitement as the lights go down and the curtains part.

I'll never forget the week I spent in New York City as a high school senior. The entire purpose of the trip was to experience New York City theater. I remember how I was utterly amazed and inspired by the lights, sights and sounds of New York.

I actually didn't see too much of the city on that trip. That was mostly because I spent hours in line each day trying to get half-price same-day New York theater tickets. It was worth it.

Unforgettable: New York Theater

It was a singular, unforgettable experience. New York live theater has the power to move you, to transport, entertain you, and to make you think. Until I made the journey to New York City to experience the theater, I never knew that a show entirely based on tap dancing could bring tears to the eyes.

I had no idea how quickly live theater transported me to a completely different era - to times long before I was born. I did not know how seeing a play could change my life.

Not to be Missed

But live theater has a unique power to play out before our eyes - our follies, our triumphs our meanness and cruelty, and our enlightenment and goodness. No other medium has quite the impact that live theater has. And no city has quite the impact New York City does.

Here's a tip: get a copy of the NY Times, and take a look at the latest shows. Make a schedule, and take the trip that you will never forget. New York City theater is something that everyone should experience in their lifetime.
