Tahiti Hiking... Who Knew?

Tahiti Hiking... Who Knew? By Alex Russel

Before the huge success of the Survivor series on CBS, Pacific tropical islands were largely equated with romantic honeymoons, and idling the day away with a soothing Pina Colada. Here is an idea to visit the always-popular island of Tahiti, but not for tropical romance solely, but a Survivor-like swimming and hiking vacation, as well.

A great place to see on a Tahiti hiking vacation is the Tahiti surfing resort called Pension Bonsejouir, on the little island of Tahiti Iti, about 40 minutes from Papeete, the capital.

Hiking The "Other" Tahiti

Tahiti Iti is a small region, sparsely populated, and far less touristy than its mainland neighbor to the north. The southern parts of Tahiti Iti, including Pension Bonsejouir, are only accessible by hiking, or by boat.

Remote and, therefore, overlooked, this region boasts clear waters, waterfalls, caves, and some of the best beaches around. Tahiti Iti also attracts surfers from all over the world.

It's a destination where you can experience the authentic side of Tahitian culture, meet lots of friendly locals, be kind to your wallet, and have an adventure of a lifetime.

Hiking Friendly Pension Bonsejouir

Spread over two acres of lawn filled with Tahitian flowers and trees, what Pension Bonsejouir lacks in opulence it makes up for in character. Guests can choose from a range of accommodation options, including bungalows, private rooms, shared rooms, or even camping.

Pension Bonsejouir is not for the room service types, as all guests share a communal kitchen. Facilities include free use of kayaks, volleyball, and the entertainment system in the restaurant/bar area.

The highlight of any swimming and hiking vacation to Pensioner Bonsejouir would be the canoe excursion, exploring Tahiti Iti's most remote places by boat.

On this trip, you'll get to see the spectacular cliffs of Pari, hike into a dense rainforest to swim in the Vaipoiri Grotto, and snorkel in a turquoise coral garden. The adventure ends on the beach for a gourmet lunch.

There are plenty of great spots for hiking and exploring in this region, but the beach remains as the main attraction. Surfers come from all over the world in search of the ultimate wave.

Teahupoo (or 'Chopes' for short) is world-renowned when it comes to surfing. Local guides with boats can advise you on the best break to suit your level of experience. Once you're out beyond the break, be prepared for the ride of your life!

Less experienced surfers probably are better off trying one of the other locations around Tahiti Iti, such as the mellower Papera Beach located only half-an-hour up the coast from Teahupoo.

When you travel to Tahiti, remember that it's always best to come during the dry season (May to October); no swimming and hiking vacation should get caught up in the rain.
