Research My Vacation > Weekly Column > Reeling Them In on a Baja Fishing Vacation
Baja California in Mexico is the long bit dangling into the Pacific, parallel to the east coast of Mexico. It is an enormously long peninsula (1,000 miles), and this means there are 2,000 miles of fishing coastline. Furthermore, Baja's west coast encloses an equally long stretch of water, the Gulf of California, and this means that for those of you wanting some Baja deep sea fishing excitement, the water is relatively calm and 'user friendly'. The Sea of Cortez is a very popular destination for sports fishing and here, as in many other spots on the peninsula, there are fish species in for the chase, including black marlin, swordfish, sailfish, dorado, wahoo, yellow-fin tuna, and roosterfish. Baja Fishing Trip Regulation Tip Everyone who fishes from a boat requires a sports fishing permit and your boat must be licensed. Charter boat owners usually have a license pre-arranged but be sure to check first. Applications can be submitted to Mexico's Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Fisheries (SEMARNAP) office in San Diego. Baja fishing is not the only treat Summer is the best time to fish and, during the season, there are a dozen other things to do in Baja with the rest of your precious fishing vacation time. There's cycling, golfing, hiking, diving and surfing, and if that's not enough to deplete your energy, you could top it off with a little snorkeling or sailing. During January through March you can pay your respects to the fishing heavy-weights and do some whale-watching. Come November, you might try and spot God on his Harley at the annual Baja 1,000 off-road motorcycle race in November! About the Author Amanda Lewis is a freelance writer and researcher.
