 | | Research My Vacation > Destinations > Texas From the Coast to the Plains It is easy to regard Texas as a state of the plains, and although some of the state is dominated by this type of country, Texas is much more diverse than this. It has a long coastal region, onto the Gulf of Mexico, and has hill country and forest as well as prairies and lakes. This is a diverse state, with even more diverse population centers, and has something for everyone.

Big State, Big Choices Texas has several major population centers, including Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Galveston and San Antonio. Each of these has its own distinct culture and flavor, with different histories and industries. The state is so big that it is worth dividing into the different geographical regions to consider what you wish to do. For instance, a few days on the coast, and some time spent looking at the prairies and lakes, or driving through the hill country and onto the plains. Texas is rich in history, and you should take time to work out what you want to see.
Three Climatic zones Because Texas is such a large state, it falls in three different climatic zones. North Texas has a climate with warm days, cool nights, warm winters, moderate rainfall and low humidity. West Texas is mountainous, and the climate is cooler than north Texas, with more rainfall but still, warm winters. Mid Texas and the Coastal region are sub-tropical in nature.
